VIZ have been making liquid effects for commercials for many years. We have made effects using water, beer, and coffee, as well as effects involving more viscous liquids like chocolate, milk or honey.
Liquids special effects often involve mobile plumbing, pumping, squirting, pouring, or spraying of liquids.
We have also been asked to make bubbles, swirls, vortices, foam effects and more.... |

Layer of floating liquid,
Revolving liquid spiral
Combining with director Stef Viaene again we developed several liquid effects for Mon Cheri.
On the left we have an excerpt of a clip of cherries floating in mid-air, on a layer of "liqeur"...and cherries penetrating
a spiral form made from liqeur...We used a very viscous oil in order to maintain the integrity of the liquid form...
Below is the workshop test we made using the low-res CASIO. Before shooting we presented this test to the director for approval. |

Working for Bandits in Paris we developed very specific and very controlled water effects for Dove...
We were shooting close, and in high speed. Therefore we had to time the impact of the splash to the millisecond. The amount of splash was precisely controlled in order to maintain legibility of the label.
On the left we can see the pack come to life through a symmetrical splash. The effect required very fast taps, a custom made baffle and a timing rig, using in this case MAX MSP.
Below we have a water explosion in mid-air and twolegible pack shots. |

Petrol inside an "engine"
Here is a clip of only the liquid effects we developed for Raf Wathion, for his AUDI commercial...Other effects such as fire and explosions can be seen on the full page about the AUDI commercial...
We made ripples, sprays and splashes to show the diesel as it is used inside the engine. |

Here we see drops of milk coming from three directions, colliding...Milk is more viscous than water and makes more sculptural forms. These images were made as part of the Vallelata project with Stef Viaene.
Below is a low-res studio test, made on the CASIO, of a similar collision using water. There is also an image of the rig we used. |

Bubbles
On the right can be seen some of the rigging that we have used to make bubbles...We have made "curtains" of bubbles for the camera to pass through for Duvel beer, bubbles in gel for Nivea. For the Audi commercial we needed bubbles...

Ripples
We made ripples for Audi and Philips...The PHILIPS toothbrush emerging through the surface of the water, was made for for Brian Morris at TT film productions. We needed a large aquarium with a mechanism through the bottom of the tank. The movement should not disturb the smooth surface....Unfortunately the archive material no longer exists.

Sprays
Sprays for Audi and Nivea.
On the left we can see a few workshop tests, made with the CASIO. The droplets are so small that the CASIO can't actually pick them up.
Filming the spray requires lot's of light, a good camera and often larger drops than normal...

Splashes
We have made many splashes, for example this lemon...
With Theierry Cambray we developed an installation to throw liquid through a tunnel past the camera lens...as if the camera was in the middle of the splash itself...

Pours
Pours and slowed down pours made for Nescafe, Nivea and Adez. The pour depends on the shape of the mouth used, the viscosity of the liquid, the volume of the pour, and other factors...
By making the pour in another medium it is possible to slow the pour down, achieving a kind of sculpture... |

Two tons of live beer in an aquarium...
To achieve the effects for the second Duvel beer commercial we needed an glass aquarium capable of containing 2000 litres of beer!
The camera was then put inside the aquarium while the various effects were taking place...
Basically we were catalysing a foaming reaction using high pressure air. This gives very unusual results as can be seen in the commercial.

Here ia a quick image of a shockwave made from two spurts of liquid. The spurts of liquid are laminar...that is non-turbulent. In fact it is possible to be extremely precise with this technique. The small workshop test below shows how we can aim the liquid until we achieve a perfect imapct and a vertical shockwave...
By using millisecond timing we were able to film a close-up of a floating foam ball being destroyed by two smalls jets of liquid. This can be seen in the second film below... |

Here we can see colleague Udo Akemannworking in the large temporary tank that we needed to film a simple commercial for Bacardi. Factoring in things like perspective and depth of field it often turns out that you need large tanks. This in turn involves pumps and sturdy support structures... |

Liquid vortex
Vortex, vortex with fruit around the axis. Liquid vortexes can be made to run continuously or to be of a shorter duration...for example the Duvel beer commercial required a short vortex, whereas AUDI and the fruit drink commercial shown on the left neede a standing vortex. |
